Yes, politicians have fabricated a crisis to distract us from real problems like growing poverty. Their crisis is also self-serving. The worse schools look, the more willing the public is to accept corporatist fixes, like charter schools and EMOs. By portraying teachers and their unions as corrupt or bumbling, they hasten the demise of organized labor in the public sector.
